Casey backs in young Bombers

FRESH off his side’s first win of season 2022, Cobden coach Dan Casey wants his young group to build its confidence and back itself as it chases a second victory.

The Bombers are set to host Port Fairy in the Hampden League Live Match of the Day at Cobden Community Bank Reserve this Saturday and the first year Bombers mentor has already been pleasantly surprised by how good his side can be when it plays to its strengths.

“During the pre-season we just let them go and train and saw what we needed to work on before putting our spin on it,” Casey said.

“One thing we noticed is they just weren’t confident enough in pulling the trigger.

“They’ve got so many strengths and if we keep trying to curb that and not let them play to their strengths, they lose their confidence really quickly.

“We’ve been pumping (it in to them), if you back yourself to kick a goal from 40 (metres), you go for it, you just back yourself and try hit those kicks and things like that.

“No one is going to yell at them or anything and what we’ve found is that more numbers are coming to training (because) it’s a great place to be around.

“Everything so far has been great.”

Casey has also been impressed by his group’s willingness to improve and absorb information as it seeks to better its ninth place finish last season.

“They just listen,” Casey said.

“That’s probably the main thing. They’re going to stuff up every now and then but when you talk them through it and show them where we’ve got to improve, they love it.

“It’s an exciting time there.”

The Bombers opponent, Port Fairy, is still yet to register a win and while set to face a tough task, Seagulls utility Matt Sully believes his side’s best is just around the corner.

“We started okay against North (Warrnambool) and we all know the result but it’s been positive signs to start (the season) with,” he said.

“But having such a young and inexperienced side, teams are just running over the top of us.

“There was a lot of positives to come out of South (Warrnambool match) last weekend even though we lost by 80 points but the more that we play and train together as a side (it’ll start to click).

“The development over the first three weeks has been really positive and I can only see that getting better.”

The match will be Sully’s first for the season, and he expects the contest to be a great test for his club’s youthful list.

“It’ll be exciting to play against Cobden, another young side,” he said.

“We’ll be able to go out there and not have our kids worry about getting hammered by the bigger boys.

“In saying that though, Cobden, ever since the under 12s, have been physical and tough and it’s always a good game over there, they always get a good crowd.

“I’m really excited to play with some of the young fellas, I’m looking forward to it.”

In the other matches, Portland hosts Camperdown in a Super Saturday at Hanlon Park and North Warrnambool welcomes Hamilton Kangaroos to Bushfield Recreation Reserve, with Koroit and South Warrnambool set to enjoy a week’s break after the pair’s match was played on Good Friday earlier this month.

Umpire Development Day

I would sincerely like to thank all the Umpire Coaches who all did an amazing job last weekend assisting with the development of our Umpires.  Joy Errey, Wilma Wallace, Shirley McSwain, Karen Huf, Nikki Mitchem, Renae Sullivan, Megan Logan, Amelia Armytage and also Ann Castles and Deb Hemer from Netball Victoria did a fantastic job mentoring a majority of our umpires.

Thank you also to the Umpire Coordinators at each club who supported us in the organization of this day.  Well done to all the umpires.  Hopefully you will benefit from the feedback you have been given.  It is our aim to continue to monitor the performance of the umpires during the coming weeks and further assist with more mentoring and/or testing later in the season.

Results from last week

South Warrnambool continue to shine this season putting in another solid team performance last week to easily account for Port Fairy, winning 61 – 21.  Once again, Annie Blackburn was outstanding in attack, whilst Alicia Moloney tried hard for the seagulls.

Camperdown were competitive against their close town rivals Cobden until half time but then the bombers had the upper edge in the third quarter scoring 16 goals to 6 and put the match beyond doubt.  They were eventual winners by 23 goals.

Terang Mortlake would have been relatively happy with their start to the match at Victoria Park only a goal down at half time.  Mollie McKinnon and Millie Jennings worked hard defensively in the second half causing many turnovers and helped the Saints score a 15 goal win.

Portland scored their first win for the season on Monday in their Anzac Day clash with the Hamilton Kangaroos.  Portland were very impressive in attack with Jessica Crow putting in a best on court performance and scoring a majority of their goals.  Hamilton, who currently have a number of players out injured, struggled to make the most of their opportunities, going down by 21 goals at the final siren.

North Warrnambool took the lead early in their game against Warrnambool but the Blues steadied and clawed back into the game and went on to win by 12 goals.  Amy Wormald and Jessica Thwaites combined well in attack to help secure the 4 points.

My predictions for this week.

Cobden take on Port Fairy at the Bendigo Bank Community Reserve.  Port Fairy will struggle against the defensive pressure from Cobden and the bombers should win comfortably.

Portland Tigers are always hard to beat at home and I think Camperdown, who are still developing some of their younger players, will struggle against a tough Portland opponent.

Warrnambool take the trip down the highway to Terang to take on the bloods.  I anticipate this to be a close game and the difference will come from the strength of Warrnambool’s attack.  The blues will get over the line, just.

North Warrnambool verse Hamilton at home.  Hamilton are struggling to fill the void with a few players out injured and may struggle against the fast paced Eagles.  However, the Eagles are still working on finding their best combinations and will have to score accurately if they are to earn the points here.

As there will be no record next week, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Mums a very Happy Mother’s Day for May 8th.  Hope all enjoy your Special Day.

Good Luck to all football and netball teams competing this weekend.

Around the Grounds with Hilly

This weekend we conclude the first month of Hampden League action and have there been many surprises? In my eyes, there haven’t been too many.

South Warrnambool and Portland enter this round of matches undefeated. We always knew South Warrnambool were going to be a dangerous outfit, due to maintaining their 2021 list but adding some missing components, that being a couple of forwards to assist Beks, Kelly and co. Portland is the other team that has impressed, they play an exciting brand of football, even across the ground and believe in the game-style devised by coach Jarrod Holt. The challenge over the next few weeks for the Tigers will be how they match up against the Roosters, Saints and Eagles. But they are in a good position to play their first ever finals series despite having qualified last season.

North Warrnambool have been interesting over the first three rounds, a huge win over Port Fairy, a nail-biting loss to Koroit and a recent loss to Warrnambool. The Eagles entered the season with much hype, and despite an indifferent start, don’t count them out. They have a great list profile, some players adapting to their new team and new roles having been given to others. As we all know, coach Adam Dowie would fully review the last few games, identified the teams improvement areas and organised themselves for the upcoming block of matches.

A team that I’m looking forward to seeing is Cobden. New coach Dan Casey has entered the 2022 season with a development mind-set with the Bombers and over the first three rounds, there has been gradual improvement resulting in a recent win against arch rivals Camperdown. I think this season will be one to be aware of the younger sides, as they are capable of getting under a team’s guard and causing an upset. Keep a keen eye on the Cobden squad this season.

Next weekend is a bye round and in previous seasons, the discussion this time of the year would be around inter-league. It’s a great shame that it is not occuring, especially with the momentum our league had under the guidance of South Warrnambool export Jonathan Brown. I would love to see us play some form of representative football again, taking on the likes of Geelong, Ballarat or Ovens and Murray at venues like GMHBA Stadium and Mars Stadium as a curtain raiser to an AFL fixture, celebrating country football. A match like this would promote our league and potentially expose some of our great young players to AFL, VFL and SANFL clubs.

Only four matches this weekend with South Warrnambool and Koroit having the week off due to playing Good Friday. My tips are:
Cobden vs Port Fairy – The Cobden Bombers are showing great early signs and will be hard to beat at home. Port Fairy are getting some more key experienced personnel back but it won’t be quite enough to get the win.
North Warrnambool vs Hamilton – Hamilton will enjoy playing at Bushfield, as its a similar size to Melville Oval. Whilst the Kangaroos will be competitive, expect a statement performance from the Eagles.
Portland vs Camperdown – I love the way Portland are playing and it’s becoming an extremely hard road-trip for teams. Camperdown will be competitive but won’t have enough fire-power to derail the Tigers winning streak.
Terang Mortlake vs Warrnambool – The Bloods are young and exciting and will be hoping to bounce back after a huge defeat last round. Warrnambool were outstanding last week against the Eagles and have set the precedent of how they need to play each week. The Blues have some nice kids in Radley and Mast, they’ll be hard to beat.

Have a great weekend at the football.

Round 3: Warrnambool vs North Warrnambool Eagles Highlights

Weekly Netball Wrap

Hope you all enjoyed your Easter break last weekend and are looking forward to another Round of Football and Netball.

This week’s Round will be dedicated to Umpire Development and we have been very fortunate to acquire the Services of Ann Castles and Deb Hemer from Netball Victoria.  On Friday evening a “Rules Discussion” and Netball Connect information session for Umpires will be held at the Warrnambool Netball Stadium from 7.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.  Then on the Saturday/Monday, Ann and Deb along with other Umpire Educators will be at your games providing valuable mentoring for all Umpires.  Umpires play an important role in our game and as you’ve no doubt heard before, you can’t have a game without them.  Providing Umpire development will help grow and improve the standard of our netball in the HFNL and we will continue to provide opportunities to assist their development in the future.

This week a HFNL Media Release recognised two significant members of the Hampden League Netball Community.  Both Dot Jenkins and Tracey Baker have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to Netball within the Hampden League.  The Open Netball Best & Fairest Award will now be known as the “Dot Jenkins Medal” and the Division 1 Best & Fairest Award has been named the Tracey Baker Award” What an honour it is for both Dot and Tracey and a fantastic opportunity for the League to recognise the outstanding service both these ladies  have given to our game over many many years both on and off the court.

Congratulations Dot and Tracey.

It’s always a pleasure to acknowledge the milestone games and this week we Congratulate Molly Hutt from the Cobden FNC for playing her 100th Open game.  Molly has been around the courts for a very long time having played all her Junior Netball for Cobden.  She has also done some coaching and umpiring during her journey and has been a representative player for the League on many occasions.  Congratulations Molly!

Round 2 results

Sarah Moroney put in another strong performance to help Cobden score a comfortable win over Portland – Cobden winning 57 – 33.

Hamilton Kangaroos were very competitive against Warrnambool going down by 7 goals at the final siren – 49 to 42.

Terang Mortlake are starting to build and gel as a team and were victors over Port Fairy by 13 goals.  Eboni Knights was Terang Mortlake’s best player and Maddie Green had a great game for Port Fairy.

Hollie Phillips was accurate in goals teaming well with Olivia Marris to help South Warrnambool score a 27 goal win over a young Camperdown team.

Koroit and North Warrnambool had a great battle all game with the end result being a draw.  Mia Mills was a strong performer through the centre court whilst Rachel Batten was instrumental in defence holding Nell Mitchell to just 18 goals for the match.

My predictions for this Week

South Warrnambool are playing a great brand of netball under new Coach Will Jamison and will have a comfortable win over Port Fairy.

North Warrnambool take on Warrnambool at Reid Oval and the Eagles certainly have a strong team list but they are still working on finding their best combinations.  Warrnambool will be relying on their experienced players to perform well.  I think North will win accuracy in the circle will be a key factor.

Terang Mortlake will be keen to see how they match up against powerhouse Koroit.  Terang will struggle to overcome the strength of Koroit’s attack and the saints will take the points in this game.

Close town rivals, Camperdown and Cobden do battle at Leura Oval.  Camperdown have some very talented up and coming players but that will not be enough to overcome another premiership contender in Cobden. Cobden will win comfortably.

Portland travel to Melville for their Anzac Day clash with the Hamilton Kangaroos.  Portland continue to be a competitive team this season and will make teams earn the premiership points.  This game will be no different but I think Hamilton will come away with a narrow win.

Good Luck to all Football and Netball teams competing this weekend.

Around the Grounds with Hilly

It was another successful Good Friday clash between South Warrnambool and Koroit last week, with an extremely strong crowd witnessing the top of the table clash. Whilst this specific clash is only two years old, I believe it has to be a permanent fixture as it is a terrific showcase of our league.

All of the pre-season talk around the teams to beat this season mainly featured North Warrnambool and Koroit, after seeing South Warrnambool first-hand last weekend, they are the real deal and certainly have to be discussed as a major contender. Whilst a lot of their system is very similar to last season, one notable improvement area is their forward line-structure with the addition of Jack Dye, Dylan Weir and second-year Rooster Ricky Handerson. The Roosters looked extremely dangerous in this area and not as predictable as previous seasons with Shannon Beks having to shoulder a significant load. A lot to like about the Roosters in 2022.

We might be only two games into the season for most, already I have been extremely impressed and excited by the amount of underage players making the step-up to senior football. The Hampden League is so fortunate to have a number of great coaches, which is helping some great young talent being fast-tracked and given the opportunity to play at the highest level. Some names I think clubs should be excited to see include Paddy O’Sullivan and Jack Block (Koroit), Reggie Mast and Ethan Boyd (Warrnambool, Hamish Cook (Hamilton), Tate Porter (North Warrnambool, Ryley Hutchins and Xavier Vickers (Terang Mortlake), Oscar Pollock (Port Fairy), Max Irving and Jonah Maher (South Warrnambool), Nick Jones and Ash Royal (Camperdown), Jack Walsh and Kade Lovell (Portland) and Tyler Humphrey and Henry Robertson (Cobden). So much great talent to enjoy this season.

Another big round of matches in the Hampden Football Netball League this weekend, including a Super Saturday clash and an ANZAC Day battle at Melville Oval. My tips:

Port Fairy vs South Warrnambool – Port Fairy face a tough assignment with the Roosters firing early. Another great test but lack the experience to overcome South Warrnambool.

Warrnambool vs North Warrnambool – Warrnambool will be looking to play four solid quarters of football against prime opposition. The Blues have been great in patches and will enjoy another run on the Reid Oval. The Eagles have some injury concerns with a few top-liners, a tight contest with North Warrnambool to get over the line.

Camperdown vs Cobden – An epic battle of two young sides coming up at the Leura Oval. A really hard game to tip but I think the Magpies are always dangerous at home and they have the Sam Gordon factor.

Koroit vs Terang Mortlake – With some key players to return over the coming weeks, the Saints young depth has stood up to the challenge. I like Koroit’s flexibility across the ground and they will be hard to beat, despite the Bloods being very impressive in round two.

Hamilton vs POrtland – What an ANZAC Day Clash coming up, with both teams in good form. I like the Tigers in this game, as they have a deep midfield, some great key backs and a flexible and mobile forward line. The Kangaroos are extremely fit but lack some height. Portland just for me.

I hope everyone gets out and supports their team over the weekend, it’s been a great start to the season with some exciting games and results already.

See you at the footy.
