HFNL Weekly Netball Wrap: Round 2

HFNL Weekly Netball Wrap: Round 2

12th April 2024

There was a real buzz at each court around the Hampden Football Netball League in the season opening round.

After a long pre-season campaign, many practice matches and adaptation to rule changes, all participants were able to get back into their Saturday morning/afternoon routines.

Friday Netball was a success, with Warrnambool hosting Koroit in a night time fixture. The Saints young squad were outstanding in the second half to register their first win of the season.

South Warrnambool were faultless in their clash with North Warrnambool, with new star recruit Emma Buwalda dominating in the goal circle with 29 goals.

Portland and Port Fairy played a high scoring draw at Hanlon Park. Heidi Jones continues her growth in the Open Division with a best on court effort and 33 goals while Emma Stacey was the Seagulls best.

A youthful Cobden lifted their intensity against the Hamilton Kangaroos winning by 33 goals, while Terang Mortlake under new coach Kym Grundy got the points against Camperdown.

Milestones

South Warrnambool stalwart Peta Van Bruggen records her 350th game this weekend. A huge effort over a long journey, with the Division 3 player having been associated with the Roosters for almost 25 years. A valuable contributor on the court, but an even harder worker of the court, a favorite Rooster team-mate for many. Enjoy the celebration Peta on your amazing achievement.

Returning North Warrnambool star Kate O’Meara plays her 150th senior game tomorrow. Returning to the Eagles in 2024, Kate is the Eagles Open Assistant Coach. She has been a loyal club-person for a long time at Bushfield and a much loved club-person. Congratulations on the amazing milestone Kate!

Round 2 Matches

Port Fairy vs Warrnambool – Both sides are chasing their first wins of the season under their new coaches in Lisa Arundell and Kate Lindsey.

Terang Mortlake vs South Warrnambool – The young exciting crop from Terang Mortlake will push themselves this week, when they meet the Everest of Hampden Netball, South Warrnambool.

Koroit vs Cobden – Arguably the match of the round with two quality teams meeting. Both have amazing young talent, a close game is the selection.

North Warrnambool vs Portland – The Portland Tigers will be looking to build on their round one performance and cause a great upset. Laura Kelly will be a great find for the Tigers. The Eagle will be hoping the likes of Vardy and Billings can lead the way.

Hamilton vs Camperdown – Both clubs with young 2024 squads, this should be an entertaining clash. The Lily Eldridge and Eboni Knights shoot off will be a highlight.

Enjoy your weekend on the court.
