This Season is certainly proving to be a very challenging season for all involved. Playing with no
Spectators once again and commencing the shortened Junior Finals Series with no crowds is
certainly not what we had hoped but it’s encouraging to see everyone still so keen to get playing in
what is left of the Competitions.
Last Round’s results
On a very wet and cold day there were no real surprises in the Open results. Warrnambool easily
accounted for Hamilton Kangaroos by 27 goals. Koroit empowered their dominance over the bloods
winning by 35 – Nell Mitchell once again dominant in the circle scoring 49 goals. Portland notched
up another win scoring a 12 goal victory over Port Fairy. Cobden remain undefeated after having a
comfortable win over Camperdown 59 – 39 and South Warrnambool were able to account for North
Warrnambool winning by 11 goals.
Umpiring News
Congratulations top Ashlyn Whelan from the South Warrnambool Football Netball Club who was
tested and awarded her C Badge Umpire Accreditation on July 31st. Ashlyn has been working
towards her Badge all season and has worked hard to improve her umpiring. Well done Ashlyn.
Rising Stars
It has been pleasing to watch with interest the development of the younger players making the most
of their opportunities, playing some quality Senior Netball with their respective teams. Mary Place
(Camperdown), Lara Taylor (Cobden), Holly Phillips (Hamilton Kangaroos), Millie Jennings (Koroit),
Tahni Porter (North Warrnambool), Olivia Marris (South Warrnambool) and Ava Pearce
(Warrnambool) are just some of the young players who have had an impact in the Open Competition
this Season, and I expect some of these players will be in the running for the Rising Star Award for
2021.
This week’s matches
Hamilton Kangaroos take on Portland at Melville oval and whilst Portland have been very
competitive and a hard team to beat all season, I think Hamilton may come away with a narrow win.
The 9 th and 10 th placed teams do battle when Terang Mortlake make the journey to the Garden’s
oval. Both these teams have struggled this season with injuries being a major factor but I think the
bloods can add to their premiership points.
Cobden have been the bench mark all season and Koroit will be keen to test themselves against the
Competition’s best. Koroit have a knack for finding form at the right end of the season but the
Bombers have a lot of depth and versatility and will find the answers to overcome the saints once
again.
Camperdown are still in the hunt for a top 5 finish and will be keen to get a win over the inform
Roosters. Camperdown with a full list will challenge South in a goal for goal clash. It was a drawn
match last time they met but I think South will want revenge and will go one better with a win this
time.
North Warrnambool verse Warrnambool and are fighting to keep their spot in the top 5. Last time
they met, North went down by the narrowest of margins so they will be eager to reverse the tables
this time. The blues are one of the inform teams at this stage of the season and North will have a
battle on their hands but they are capable of taking the win if they can keep their turnovers to a
minimum.
We look forward to some great games in our 15/U Reserve and 13/U Reserve Competitions when
they commence their two week Final Series at the Ridley Reserve in Terang on Sunday.
