Around the Grounds with Hilly: Round 11

28th June 2024

The Hampden Football Netball League mourned the loss of iconic media personality Lyndsay Hill this week. Lyndsay, a well credentialled footballer with Colac, played 185 senior matches, which included two senior premierships and 6 interleague opportunities. He was well known for his commentary of the Hampden League over a 33 year career beginning in the 1970’s. He called over 700 games, which included 30 interleague matches for the Bottle Greens. The Hampden League Hall of Fame member partnered with the great late John Holland for a quarter of a decade, becoming well-known figures in the HFNL competition. Lyndsay was always well prepared and researched and knew a lot of details of the players he called. One of the nicest human beings and a real big supporter of the HFNL.

Vale Lyndsay Hill, you were one of the greats.

Malcolm’s Milestone

Portland ruckman Ben Malcolm will feature in his 150th senior match this weekend, when the Tigers play at home against the North Warrnambool Eagles. Ben has been one of the premier ruckmen of the competition, and is highly regarded by his team-mates and opponents as a hard but honest competitor. The Tigers star is currently forging a great partnership with some Portland guns in Lachie Hupputz, Toby Jennings and Tom Sharp. All the best in game 150 Malcs.

Huppatz Coaching in 2025

Some further great news for the Portland Tigers this week, with coach Lachie Huppatz extending his tenure as coach. Lachie has been a great leader in 2024, despite the Tigers yet to register a win. He is keen to oversee the next phase of Portland’s re-emergence and is the right man for the job. The No.4 has been playing sensational football and has been a great teacher to some of the young players carving their journey, such as Klay Nicholls, Charlie Piergrosse and Ched Finck. A great appointment for the Portland Tigers in 2025.
