HFNL Weekly Netball Wrap: Round 11

HFNL Weekly Netball Wrap: Round 11

23rd June 2022

A Cap of Last Week’s Results
There were some very interesting results in last week’s matches with 4 of the 5 games finishing with a margin of 5 goals or less. Hamilton Kangaroos matched up well against the younger Koroit Team with the game ending in a draw. Nell Mitchell was again a steady influence in the attacking circle with 29 goals and Kelsey Lewis also scored 29 goals for the Kangaroos. Portland only went down to Warrnambool by two goals. Portland lead at every change but Warrnambool outscored them in the last quarter 11 goals to 8 earring the blues a narrow win. North Warrnambool scored a comfortable win over the seagulls 56 – 30. Rachael Batten and Jordyn Murphy were able to shut down the Port Fairy attack and Tessa Allen had another standout game for Port Fairy. Eboni Knights returned to the Terang Mortlake lineup but Camperdown fought out a close match and took a 5 goal win over the bloods. Mary Place scored well with 33 goals Cobden and South Warrnambool played out a fantastic in what was a highly skilled and fast contest. The bombers defensive trio – Nadine McNamara, Remeny McCann and Sarah Moroney – made it hard work for the Rooster’s attack Cobden took the honours this time round with a 5 goal win.

Milestone Games
Congratulations to Kylie Grayland from the Koroit FNC who will play her 350th Club Senior game this Saturday.
Kylie has been playing netball with Koroit for as long as she can remember. This milestone game, a game where she will also record the highest number of Club games, is something that has been achieved over nearly three decades. Kylie has played in all Senior Grades – Open, Div 1, Div 2 and even a few appearances in Div 3. Kylie was a member of the A Grade (Open) Premiership Team in 2001 and she also won Premierships in Division 2 in 2012 and 2018. Kylie’s individual achievements have been outstanding winning the Hampden FNL Best and Fairest Awards in Div 2 on 6 occasions (2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2019). She also won a League Best and Fairest Award for Division 1 in 2010. A multitude of the Koroit FNC Awards also carry Kylie’s name. Kylie has also been an active volunteer for the Club taking on roles such as Coaching, Canteen Co-ordinator and a member of the Events Committee, just to name a few. This is an amazing achievement Kylie, well done and all the best for your game this weekend.

Congratulations also to Meg Kelson who will play her 50th Senior game for the South Warrnambool FNC this weekend. I’m sure there will be many more to come in the years ahead. Congratulations.

My Predictions for this Week
Cobden versus Portland at the Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve. I believe both Portland and Hamilton Kangaroos will have some say in determining the Top 5 positions, but Cobden will be determined to keep their Top 3 position. Cobden will take the win here.
South Warrnambool travel down the highway to take on Camperdown at Leura Oval and Carly Watson is likely to take the court after a mandatory rest last week. The Roosters will be keen to make amends for last week’s loss and take a comfortable win over the Magpies.
Warrnambool take on Hamilton Kangaroos at the Reid. The Kangaroos were very competitive against Koroit last week and I think they are capable of taking another win. However, the Blues are fighting for a top 3 finish and will not lie down lightly. In what will be a close contest I think Hamnilton will get over the line just.’
Port Fairy play Terang Mortlake at home. Port Fairy are keen to improve on their results from the first half of the season and I think this will be an opportunity for Port Fairy to get their first win.. Terang Mortlake have struggled with injuries over the past few weeks and could take a game or two for them to gain some momentum. Port Fairy could score a narrow win.
In the final game this round North Warrnambool Eagles do battle with the Koroit Saints at Victoria Park. North Warrnambool’s consistency has been questioned more than ever this season with mixed results in the first half of the season,. Last time these two sides met it resulted in a draw. If the Eagles bring their “A” game they can take the win here and push for a top 3 finish.

Good Luck to all teams competing in Football and Netball this weekend.
