This weekend marks a significant occasion across the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) as all clubs come together to recognise Farmers Round. In partnership with our affiliate clubs, the league is proud to stand in solidarity with our farming communities, many of whom continue to experience the harsh realities of drought and financial hardship.
Farmers Round is not just another themed weekend — it’s a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and essential role our farmers play, not just in the Western District but throughout the country. It’s a chance for the football and netball communities to acknowledge their contribution and demonstrate our ongoing support in a meaningful way.
As a simple but symbolic gesture, all footballers and netballers across the HFNL will wear a green armband during their matches this weekend. The green armband represents hope, growth, and unity — values deeply connected to the land and the people who work it.
While we pause to recognise and support our farming community, we also celebrate the continued emergence of HFNL talent at the elite level. Last weekend saw a wave of Hampden pride throughout the AFL and VFL. Luamon Lual made a memorable AFL debut with Essendon, collecting 11 disposals, laying five tackles and kicking a goal with his very first kick — a fantastic start to what promises to be an exciting career.
The Geelong VFL team was well-stocked with South Warrnambool products, including brothers Jay and Will Rantall, Marcus Herbert, and George Stevens, all making an impact. Meanwhile, Koroit export Finn O’Sullivan continued his strong debut season with North Melbourne, booting his first AFL goal — another feather in the cap for HFNL talent development.
Back on the local stage, the competition is heating up as we approach Round 9. The ladder is incredibly tight, with just two wins separating third and eighth place. Every match this weekend shapes as a genuine 50/50 contest — a reflection of the league’s depth, competitiveness, and evenness in 2024.
There’s so much to look forward to in the next block of games. But this weekend, we do more than just play and support — we unite as a league to show our farmers they are not alone. Let’s wear green with pride.
