Around the Grounds with Hilly: Round 5

9th May 2025

Round 5 of the Hampden Football Netball League is shaping up to be one of the most exciting rounds of the season so far, with five evenly matched contests set to unfold. The spotlight will be on Bushfield Oval where the undefeated North Warrnambool Eagles take on fellow unbeaten side Portland. Adding extra interest, the Eagles will unveil Sam McLachlan for his first senior game of the season in what promises to be a high-quality encounter.

Cobden, still searching for their first win, face a crucial clash with Port Fairy. The Seagulls, also desperate for another win, will view this as a must-win opportunity to stay in touch with the competition. At Ridley Reserve, Terang Mortlake hosts South Warrnambool in what is always a fierce and proud rivalry. Adding sentiment to the occasion, members of the Bloods’ 1995 premiership team will be in attendance as part of a special reunion weekend, providing plenty of inspiration for the home side.

Meanwhile, Hamilton will be aiming to make it back-to-back wins on their home deck after an impressive showing last week. Standing in their way is Warrnambool, who have been narrowly beaten in their last two outings and will be eager to turn promising performances into premiership points.

Off the field, preparations ramped up this week for the South West Junior Carnival, with the Under 14 and Under 17 West and East representative squads holding their first training sessions. The league is fortunate to have passionate and knowledgeable coaches and support staff guiding these young athletes, and their dedication is already paying dividends.

With so many narratives across the board, Round 5 is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the early season ladder and revealing who the genuine contenders are.
