Around the Grounds with Hilly: Round 4

2nd May 2025

Last week’s ANZAC Day round was one to remember across the Hampden Football Netball League, with massive crowds turning out to commemorate, reflect, and enjoy some fantastic football.

Hamilton and Terang Mortlake hosted the ANZAC Day fixtures and both clubs were outstanding in their delivery of respectful and meaningful commemorative ceremonies. The emotion and atmosphere were palpable, reminding all in attendance of the deep connection between football and the wider community. It was a proud day for our league, and the hosting clubs deserve full credit.

Port Fairy also marked a milestone, hosting its very first senior twilight fixture under lights at Gardens Oval. The newly installed lighting proved a brilliant addition, illuminating the action in style and creating a fantastic vibe around the ground. Could this be the beginning of more twilight football in the HFNL? On this showing, we certainly hope so.

It was also May Race Week in Warrnambool, and while attention turned to the track, local footy was still in the spotlight. Congratulations to Koroit’s Liam Hoy and North Warrnambool’s Bailee Keast, who were instrumental in several wins for Wilde Racing. It’s always great to see HFNL talent excelling beyond the field.

In a special moment for the league, the HFNL welcomed a new life member with Mortlake’s Graeme Twaddle receiving the honour. Graeme’s contribution to the Mortlake Football Club is nothing short of remarkable. Over 14 years as a player, he amassed 247 senior games and kicked 300 goals, playing predominantly as a ruckman in the number 14 guernsey. He was a two-time best and fairest winner, a five-time runner-up, and captain for seven seasons. His resume also includes training with Fitzroy, 15 years on the committee, and 12 years as a selector—including during Mortlake’s 1975 premiership. Fittingly, the life membership presentation was made during the club’s 50th anniversary celebration of that famous premiership.

A week full of pride, achievement, and community spirit—exactly what the HFNL is all about.
