This weekend is the penultimate round in the Hampden Football Netball League, and there is still so much work to be done to clearly identify who our teams will be that finish in the 4th and 5th positions. Terang Mortlake, Koroit and Cobden are all fighting for the final two positions, and all have hard opposition over the next two weeks in their endeavours to consolidate a position. It is a great conclusion to the HFNL 2024 season, we might know who the top five will be this week or there is even a chance it will come down to the final round.
Sully 100th Seagulls Game
One of the competition’s best players this decade, Matthew Sully, will suit up for the Port Fairy Seagulls this weekend for the 100th time. Matt since returning from the NEAFL and VFL competition, he has been a real barometer for the purple and gold, whether it’s in defence, midfield or forward. The number 19’s strength around the contest and in the air is hard to stop along with his fitness, which sees him run out games strongly. Matt, a multiple team of the year member, has had another great 2024 season and I know he is keen to help Port Fairy rise up the ladder again.
Crawley’s 150th Game
One of the Bloods most reliable defenders will play a major milestone match this weekend, with Sam Crawley to line up in his 150th senior game. The Crawley name is synonymous with Terang Mortlake and Sam has been one of the team’s most consistent contributors in recent years. Sam always seems to get one of the harder tasks in the defence end of the ground, and is a very hard match up as his aerial defence work is sound, he’s great with the ground ball and can also rebound with good run and carry. A big milestone in a big clash for the team, and all of his Bloods team-mates will be hoping to get the job done for the #29.
Junior Finals
Congratulations to Koroit (U16) and South Warrnambool (U14) for booking their spot in the 2024 HFNL Junior Grand Finals last weekend at Bushfield. Both sides deserve their chance and will now have to wait to see who their opposition will be. The Preliminary Final will be staged at the picturesque Leura Oval in Camperdown, with South Warrnambool and Terang Mortlake locking horns in the U16 game, while North Warrnambool and Warrnambool will battle it out in the U14 game. The quality of the junior finals thus far has been exemplary and we expect another game day on Sunday.
