Around the Grounds with Hilly: Round 10

20th June 2025

The excitement around interleague football is back, with the Hampden Football Netball League naming its Under-23 training squad ahead of next month’s clash against Ballarat. Coach Adam Dowie has unveiled a 35-man squad, with all ten HFNL clubs represented — a strong endorsement of the talent spread across the competition. Portland leads the way with six selections, highlighting the Tigers’ emerging young core. The side, dubbed the Bottle Greens, will travel to Eastern Oval to contest the newly named Clinton Baulch/John Northey Cup, a fresh chapter in a proud representative tradition.

This weekend will also feature major personal milestones for two of the competition’s most respected figures.

Terang Mortlake’s Joey Arundell will run out for his 150th senior game. The Bloods skipper has been a model of consistency since debuting, known for his elite foot skills, composure under pressure, and his ability to lead from the front. Whether it’s by setting the tone early or lifting his side in a tight contest, Joey is the type of player every club needs — and every club fears.

At North Warrnambool, Tom Batten will become just the second player in club history to reach 300 games. A true servant of the Eagles, Tom’s contributions go far beyond the field. He’s represented the HFNL five times, and whether lining up at full-forward or marshalling the defence, he brings intensity, intelligence, and an unshakeable work ethic. He’s been a clubman in the truest sense — dependable, passionate, and admired by teammates and rivals alike.

As the season edges closer to its second half, the fight for finals remains wide open. Just a game or two separates second from eighth on the ladder, and last weekend’s results once again highlighted the unpredictability and competitiveness that defines the HFNL. No side can afford to drop their guard — and with every game having the feel of a mini-final, fans are in for another thrilling round.

With milestone games, interleague pride on the line, and finals hopes teetering, it’s a huge weekend across the league. Make sure you get to a game — the stakes have never been higher.
