8th July 2021

It’s nice to be back this weekend after the July bye weekend, as we prepare for the run home in the Hampden Football Netball League.

It has been a great season to date despite the mini lockdown and I firmly believe we are getting a lot closer to identifying the five teams that will participate in finals this season.

The next month will be extremely important for Koroit, North Warrnambool and South Warrnambool, as they will be fighting each other for the coveted top position and week off in the opening weekend of the finals. Funnily, they all meet each other in the next four rounds.

Portland and Camperdown are currently occupying fourth and fifth positions on the ladder and whilst boasting a two-game advantage ahead of their nearest rivals Warrnambool and Cobden, these two sides will be working hard to ensure they keep that advantage to book a spot in the final series.

Throughout the season a number of our emerging juniors have been playing a sound brand of football in the NAB Cup, and more recently in the VFL. A big shout-out to South Warrnambool export Fraser Marris, who has been playing with the Sydney Swans VFL team over the past fortnight. Marris has had excellent numbers in the NAB Cup, played for the underage Australian team in an exhibition match and now VFL, a remarkable effort and a pay-off for all his hard work. A name to watch out for.

I can’t wait for the weekend matches, with some extremely vital clashes:

North Warrnambool vs Cobden – A close encounter last time around, I think the Eagles win but Cobden will take it right up to them.

Warrnambool vs South Warrnambool – Warrnambool have been slowly finding some consistency but South Warrnambool are ready for a strong second half of the year, leading into finals. Roosters for me.

Camperdown vs Terang Mortlake – I like the Magpies here, they play a really fast moving brand of football. I’m expecting at least 6 majors from the Sam ‘Flash’ Gordon.

Port Fairy vs Hamilton – Consistency is an element these two sides are looking for, Hamilton are showing a little more for mine and will narrowly win.

Koroit vs Portland – Koroit were outstanding in the corresponding game, but I’m expecting a vastly improved performance from Portland this time around. Koroit will win but the Tigers will be improved.

See you at the footy.
