We are getting a little used to this, but it’s nice to be back again after another short lockdown. Whilst it’s not ideal having no crowds and all home clubs missing out on vital gate, raffle and canteen revenue this week, the opportunity to let people play for social engagement and overall mental health I think is important. I know the Hampden Football Netball League is working overtime (like they have all year facing many Covid19 related obstacles) to ensure the remaining fixtures will be fair and equitable for all teams, even those who are missing out on spectators over the next fortnight. Keep positive everyone and I know as a tight knit football and netball community, we will work cohesively to overcome this.
A few things are happening on the coaching front for the 2022 season, with one re-appointment and one coaching deciding to step away. One of the league’s greatest coaches in Adam Dowie will oversee the North Warrnambool Eagles again next season. Adam’s track record is nothing short of spectacular with premierships but also junior development. The crew at Bushfield will be extremely happy with this signature. On the flip side, Hamilton is searching for a new leader, with Gerard Fitzgerald stepping away at season’s end. ‘Fitz’ will be helping the club in finding a new leader and has offered his services to assist the club in the future. Hopefully the Kangaroos will find a mentor to take this playing group to their first finals series.
A great fixture of matches this week, none better than the Hampden League Live Match of the Day between South Warrnambool and North Warrnambool. Both sides are evenly matched and still have a few A-Graders not playing. I’m anticipating a close one with the Roosters just getting the job done. Hamilton takes on Warrnambool and I expect this to be close, both sides are wanting to finish the season on a high, the Blues for me. Cobden have an appointment against close-town rivals Camperdown. The Magpies are wanting to maintain their top five position while the Bombers are an outside chance to play finals if they can win. Koroit will go in as overwhelming favourites against the Bloods and I expect Portland to consolidate a finals spot against Port Fairy.
