HFNL Weekly Netball Wrap

Welcome to this year’s HFNL Football and Netball Competitions.  After 2 years of interrupted seasons, everyone will be eager to get their 2022 Campaigns up and running.

With perfect weather conditions expected for the opening round this weekend we can all look forward to witnessing some great contests across all grades of football and netball.

In the off season there was quite a few changes in the Coaching ranks.  Sharon Kenna has taken charge of the bloods, Leah Sinnott has returned to Camperdown after a short stint with the Timboon Demons and Will Jamieson, the first male Netball coach the league have had for many years, will guide a young South Warrnambool squad.  Nat O’Dea is the newly appointed coach at Hamilton Kangaroos, Kate Dobson will ably lead the Saints and Michelle Fincke has returned to the Open coaching position at Portland.  Skye Billings (North Warrnambool), Sophie Hinkley (Cobden), Renae Taylor (Port Fairy) and Raewyn Poumako (Warrnambool) will continue their Coaching roles from last year with their respective Clubs.

This week at the Bendigo Bank Recreation Reserve the Cobden FNC will unveil their new Netball facilities.  Whilst the construction of the new courts and spectator shelters has proven to be a challenge, no doubt the bombers will be excited to host alot of great matches for many years to come. To facilitate these type of upgrades it takes a great deal of work from many members of the Club and the Community so congratulations to all involved.

Early in the season many of the Clubs will be experimenting with their new recruits and trying to gauge how they will fare for the rest of the season.  At this early stage of the Competition I anticipate (in no particular order) Cobden, South Warrnambool, Koroit, North Warrnambool Warrnambool and Hamilton will all feature in the top 6 positions of the ladder at the end of the home and away season.  Hamilton Kangaroos have the potential to cause a few upsets early and will be the big improvers in season 2022.

For this week, Cobden take on South Warrnambool at Cobden.  I think the experience of the Cobden players will help them settle early and will open the season with a narrow win over the Roosters.  Hamilton travel to Victoria Park to take on the Koroit Saints.  This will be a big test for the Kangaroos early in the season, they will be competitive but may find the task a bit too much this week – Koroit should get the points here.  Camperdown and Terang Mortlake will do battle at Leura oval.  Both teams have a few new players and may take a couple of games to settle into their game plan.  I think the bloods will open their campaign with a win.  Port Fairy play the North Warrnambool Eagles at home.  I believe North Warrnambool will be strong contenders for a top 3 finish this year and will get off to a good start with a win over the seagulls.

Warrnambool host Portland Tigers at the newly developed Reid Oval.  Whilst I think Portland will have another competitive season and may cause a few upsets, Warrnambool will have too much experience in this game and will earn the 4 points here.

Good Luck to everyone for the 2022 Season.  Let’s hope we can get through the next 6 months without too many challenges and best of luck to all the Teams competing this weekend.

Around the Grounds with Hilly

After months of waiting, the day has finally arrived, the commencement of a new Hampden Football Netball League season.
For the second straight year, we were unable to complete a full season and no premiership was awarded, but all things appear positive for 2022. No doubt there will be some issues to address in regards to COVID, but hopefully all clubs can get through the year with a near full bill of health.

Last week, the Hampden League held their season launch at the Warrnambool Racing Club and the vibe around the room for the season ahead was extremely positive, there was much hype and enthusiasm, and all ten affiliate clubs appeared ready to get into action.

In 2022, we will welcome a new leader, with former Port Fairy and Terang Mortlake coach Shane Threfell taking over the reins as league president. Shane is absolutely passionate about his local football and is the perfect person to steer the league into the coming years. I know all the decisions made from Shane and the board this year will be for the greater good of the league in the short-term and long-term.

What am I expecting to occur this season in the Hampden League, there are a few things. I expect Koroit to maintain their mantle as one of the teams to beat, they’re well coached and their processes stand up every season. I expect North Warrnambool to be inside the top two. The recruitment of ex AFL big-man Nathan Vardy as well as Grovedale’s Scott Morter and a number of local juniors to hold them in good stead. I expect Portland and Hamilton to show an upward trajectory, both clubs have had a terrific pre-season and will be pushing to play finals football for the first time. I expect Sam Gordon, Sam Dobson and Will Kain to fight out for the League Goal-Kicking Award. And lastly, I  expect Terang Mortlake, Camperdown and Cobden to unveil some exciting new talent with the departure of some key experienced players.

There is so much to look forward to this year and one of highlights will be seeing football being played again at the Reid Oval on the newly redeveloped venue. The playing surface looks immaculate and the new grandstand looks first class. Hopefully all clubs enjoy the opportunity to play at this outstanding facility this season.

My Round One Tips
South Warrnambool – Terrific recruiting campaign and have a very deep midfield. A top three team for mine and will be too good for the Cobden Bombers.

Warrnambool – A terrific matchup against Portland. Two exciting teams that I believe will be playing finals. The Blues will be eager to win on their new deck.

Koroit – Despite Hamilton going to improve immensely in my mind, the Saints still have too many guns to contain.

North Warrnambool – A star-studded line up with too many match-winners, the Eagles are going to be too strong.

Camperdown – The battle between two young sides will be sensational, the spine of the Magpies still reads with Gordon, Spence, Dundon. This will be a nail-biter.

To finish, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the Baulch family on the sudden passing of Clinton. ‘Baulchy’ was a great football person, throwing enormous support behind the Hampden League Live broadcast as well as many Hampden League clubs through playing, an off- field capacity and sponsorship. Clinton will be remembered for being a great community person and someone who loved sharing a chat and joke. RIP Baulchy.

I hope everyone enjoys being back at the footy this week.
See you at the footy

Welcome from the HFNL President

Welcome to the 2022 Hampden Football Netball League season. Fingers crossed that we can put the frustration and challenges of the last couple of years behind us and look forward to a complete season of matches and an exciting finals series. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the HFNL for sticking tight during these difficult times. The ability for people to reconnect with friends and their community is more important than ever and what better environment to do that than a football/netball club.

Thanks to all the volunteers that have kept working hard to ensure their club is up and about this season. Thanks also to Mike Farrow (our league administrator) and the HFNL board members that have worked on preparation for the season and our major partners and sponsors that provide the financial support to ensure our short and long term viability. In particular, I would like to thank our major sponsors in McDonalds, Powercor, Lyndoch Living and Sungold Milk.

Good luck to all clubs, coaches and players that can put the pre-season grind behind them and get stuck into playing games of footy and netball.

See you at the footy/netball.

Shane Threlfall – HFNL President.
