KOROIT export Willem Drew continued his rapid rise up the AFL midfield charts with a best on ground performance last Friday night.

The 22 year-old finished the night with 32 disposals and eight clearances to be Port Adelaide’s best in its 40 point win over Collingwood at Marvel Stadium.

It was undoubtedly the former Saint’s best performance at the elite level in his 28 game career and continues his quick ascension into the Power’s starting midfield.

Drew was one of 11 from the Hampden’s league’s AFL-listed contingent to feature in the top grade and you can read on to find out what did what for their respective clubs:

AFL:

Zach Merrett (Essendon)

Was well held against the Giants, collecting only 20 possessions in his side’s 13 point defeat. Picked up four clearances which showed he was still effective around the stoppages.

Gary Rohan (Geelong)

Kicked a goal to go alongside 12 disposals in the Cats 38 point win in the grand final rematch against Richmond.

Hugh McCluggage (Brisbane Lions)

Celebrated his 100th game with another strong performance. Was a bit wayward in front of the sticks kicking a couple of behinds in the Lions win over Gold Coast, but 23 touches and 661 metres gained showed he was once again very effective for the victors.

Sean Darcy (Fremantle)

Collected 19 possessions alongside 22 hit-outs and five clearances in another strong performance. Finished with a goal also and could have kicked four, but missed three attempts in the Dockers loss to Sydney.

Sam Walsh (Carlton)

Collected 27 touches to go alongside four clearances and was among Carlton’s best in the Blues 39 point loss to North Melbourne.

Willem Drew (Port Adelaide)

Arguably his best game at AFL level. Drew excelled around the stoppages and ensured his defensive efforts (five tackles) and attacking forays (five inside 50s) matched his performance in the clinches.

Josh Corbett (Gold Coast Suns)

Another to produce a strong game. Kicked three goals from 16 possessions in their defeat to Brisbane.

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Western Bulldogs)

Kicked a goal in the Bulldogs 20 point win over Melbourne.

Ben Cunnington (North Melbourne)

The bullocking inside midfielder was at his damaging best around the stoppages in the Kangas’ victory over Carlton.

Finished the contest with 10 clearances, including six out of the centre, and racked up 27 possessions in another strong performance.

However, on Tuesday it was announced Cunnington would be sidelined indefinitely after having surgery to remove a testicular tumour.

The HFNL community sends its best wishes to Ben and his family and hopes the early diagnosis will allow him to make a full and speedy recovery.

State League (VFL, SANFL, WAFL):

Marty Gleeson (Essendon)

Collected 19 disposals and 10 rebound 50s across half back in the Bombers’ narrow VFL defeat to Southport.

Didn’t play:

Easton Wood (Western Bulldogs)

Didn’t play at either level as he continued his return from ankle injury but has been named in the Bulldogs line-up for this weekend’s clash with Adelaide.

Jay Rantall (Collingwood)

Did not play at either level as the VFL was paused for some Victorian and New South Wales sides due to the respective COVID lockdown. Has been named as an emergency for this weekend’s clash against West Coast.

Rowan Marshall (St Kilda)

Was a late withdrawal from the Saints clash with West Coast after it was discovered he had visited a Tier 1 exposure site in the lead-up to the clash and was forced into isolation.

Jamaine Jones (West Coast Eagles)

Still on the sidelines after injuring his ankle against Sydney three weeks ago.

Lewis Taylor (Sydney)

Did not play at either level as the VFL was paused for some Victorian and New South Wales sides due to the respective COVID lockdowns.

Association Championships

It was very pleasing to see our Representative teams perform so well at the Preliminary rounds of the Association Championships in Ballarat.  All teams went through undefeated with the 17/U team drawing one match during the day and all 3 teams won through to the Grand Final and took out their respective titles.  Unfortunately, the finals, which were to be held at the State Netball Hockey Centre this Weekend, have been cancelled due to COVID.

I think we will all be left wondering what could have been for the Hampden FNL this year as all teams would have been very Competitive in Melbourne.

Thank you to all the Coaches and Team Managers who gave their time so generously and for making the commitment to guide our Representative teams.  Thank you also to the many parents who assisted with scoring in Ballarat.

Thank you also to our Umpires, Maggie Conheady, Leo McGrath and Rachel Dickson.  They did a fantastic job on the day and were also rewarded for their efforts with each of them being allocated Semi Finals and then Rachel and Leo being awarded a Grand Final.  The Hampden FNL were well represented on the day with a few more Umpires umpiring for other neighbouring Associations.

Well done everyone – a great Team Effort.

Milestone Games

Congratulations to Amy Wormald who played her 100th game last round and also to Emma Cust who played her 200th game, both representing the Warrnambool FNC.    A great achievement from both players and to cap off their milestone games they had a great win over South Warrnambool.

Rules Discussion

After not being able to host our Rules Discussion/Umpire Appreciation Round earlier in the season, we had organized Anne Castles from Netball Victoria to come to Warrnambool on Friday July 23rd to host a Rules Discussion Session.   Once again our best plans have been upended due to COVID.  Hopefully we will be able to mentor some umpires in the remaining rounds and start planning our Umpire Mentor Program for the 2022 Season.

A recap of Round 10.

Koroit comfortably accounted for Portland defeating the tigers by 25 goals – a great percentage boost for the Saints.  North Warrnambool were defeated by ladder leaders, Cobden.  The bombers got off to a great start taking a 9 goal lead into the second quarter and were eventual winners by 14.  Hamilton had a convincing win over the seagulls with Holly Phillips dominant again in the goal circle scoring 47 of her teams 54 goals.  They defeated Port Fairy by 21.  Camperdown managed a 7 goal win over a very determined bloods outfit.  The contest between Warrnambool and South Warrnambool was highly skilled and fast paced with Warrnambool eventual winners by 6 goals.

My predictions for this week.

Cobden are playing a great brand of netball and are in great form.  They shouldn’t have too much trouble accounting for Camperdown and should remain undefeated after 11 rounds.

Despite only two wins thus far, Portland have been a tough team to beat all season.  I think they will get the points this week when they take on Port Fairy at home.

Warrnambool make the journey to Hamilton to play the Kangaroos and should earn themselves another four points.  Warrnambool are gaining some momentum at the right end of the season and could potentially finish top 3.

Terang Mortlake play Koroit at the Ridley Rec Reserve.  The bloods will be competitive but may lack some depth against the experience and versatility of the Saints.  Koroit are fighting to keep in touch with the top 3 and will get the points here.

In the match of the Round, North Warrnambool take on the Roosters at the Friendlies.  I anticipate this to be a highly skilled contest but the weather conditions may play a part in slowing up the potential speed.  I think the game will go goal for goal but with the Eagles needing the points more might be enough to get them over the line.

It’s certainly great to be back on the courts again this weekend.  Thank You to everyone who has played a part in making this possible.  Let’s hope we can get through the remaining of the season without any more interruptions.  Good Luck to all teams competing this weekend and let’s hope the heavens don’t open up too much.

We are getting a little used to this, but it’s nice to be back again after another short lockdown. Whilst it’s not ideal having no crowds and all home clubs missing out on vital gate, raffle and canteen revenue this week, the opportunity to let people play for social engagement and overall mental health I think is important. I know the Hampden Football Netball League is working overtime (like they have all year facing many Covid19 related obstacles) to ensure the remaining fixtures will be fair and equitable for all teams, even those who are missing out on spectators over the next fortnight. Keep positive everyone and I know as a tight knit football and netball community, we will work cohesively to overcome this.

A few things are happening on the coaching front for the 2022 season, with one re-appointment and one coaching deciding to step away. One of the league’s greatest coaches in Adam Dowie will oversee the North Warrnambool Eagles again next season. Adam’s track record is nothing short of spectacular with premierships but also junior development. The crew at Bushfield will be extremely happy with this signature. On the flip side, Hamilton is searching for a new leader, with Gerard Fitzgerald stepping away at season’s end.  ‘Fitz’ will be helping the club in finding a new leader and has offered his services to assist the club in the future. Hopefully the Kangaroos will find a mentor to take this playing group to their first finals series.

A great fixture of matches this week, none better than the Hampden League Live Match of the Day between South Warrnambool and North Warrnambool. Both sides are evenly matched and still have a few A-Graders not playing. I’m anticipating a close one with the Roosters just getting the job done. Hamilton takes on Warrnambool and I expect this to be close, both sides are wanting to finish the season on a high, the Blues for me. Cobden have an appointment against close-town rivals Camperdown. The Magpies are wanting to maintain their top five position while the Bombers are an outside chance to play finals if they can win. Koroit will go in as overwhelming favourites against the Bloods and I expect Portland to consolidate a finals spot against Port Fairy.

It’s great to be back, see you at the footy.

All HFNL Competitions to resume this weekend

28 July, 2021

On Tuesday 27 July the Victorian Premier announced that a range of restrictions would be eased across the state of Victoria from 11:59pm Tuesday 27 July.

Following meetings between the HFNL Executive and all member club presidents the HFNL are pleased to announce the following:

  • All Saturday Competitions will resume this weekend – 31 July (Round 11)
  • All Sunday Competitions will resume this weekend – 1 August (Round 12)
  • All matches will be subject to COVID-19 Restrictions as set by the Victorian Government, in addition to any further guidelines from AFL Victoria and/or Netball Victoria.

By way of clarity, the following is the current restrictions for community sport as per the Victorian Government’s updated table of restrictions:

  • Open for all ages, training and competition. Density quotient of 1 person per 4sqm applies
  • Limited to minimum number of people required to participate in and facilitate the activity (i.e. players, coaches)
  • Spectators not allowed (excludes people necessary for events such as teachers, instructors, trainers, coaches, umpires, carers, parents and guardians)
  • Travel restrictions lifted

All other current COVID-19 restrictions must be adhered to such as face coverings, which must be worn indoors and outdoors except if an exemption applies. Exemptions include persons who are engaged in any strenuous physical exercise (eg. football and netball players). The HFNL will await updated return to play protocols from AFL Victoria and/or Netball Victoria before advising on any further conditions (eg. use of changerooms etc).

The HFNL would like to thank all member clubs for their commitment in facilitating a resumption of HFNL football and netball. We recognise that these conditions are challenging, and encourage the entire HFNL community to respect and support the many volunteers and officials who are working hard to provide opportunities for football and netball to be conducted safely.

The HFNL will continue to monitor announcements and advice from the Victorian Government and other relevant bodies and provide further updates as appropriate following consultation with member clubs.

HFNL scenario planning for the remainder of the 2021 season.

On Wednesday 21 July, meetings were held between the HFNL Executive and all member club presidents to discuss fixture implications of the current COVID-19 lockdown for both Saturday and Sunday competitions. Whilst there are many unknowns that remain with the current COVID-19 challenges, the HFNL Executive, with support of all member clubs acknowledge the importance of providing the entire HFNL community with as much clarity as possible regarding the remainder of the season.

The HFNL are now in a position to announce the following:

Saturday Competitions

  • When all HFNL Saturday competitions resume, Round 11 Fixtures will be played. Followed by Round 12, and so on until finals commence. The number of remaining home and away fixtures/rounds is dependent on what date HFNL Saturday competitions resume.
  • Finals dates will remain scheduled as follows:
    • Qualifying/Elimination Finals – 28 & 29 August 2021
    • Semi Finals – 4 & 5 September 2021
    • Preliminary Final – 11 September 2021
    • Grand Final – 18 September 2021
  • Given the uncertainty of the restrictions that will be in place when community sport can resume, the HFNL will confirm or postpone the resumption of any HFNL matches based on return to play conditions set out by Government and/or AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria. Eg. Should no spectators be permitted and/or if Junior (ages 18 & Under) sport be permitted prior to Senior sport.

Sunday Competitions

  • When HFNL Sunday competitions can resume, Round 12 fixtures will be played, followed by Round 13 (if applicable) until finals commence. The number of remaining home and away fixtures/rounds is dependent on what date HFNL Sunday competitions resume. Note that there may be a scenario that no further home and away fixtures are played if Junior sport is not permitted prior to 15 August 2021.
  • The finals format and dates will be amended to the below. The top 4 placed sides at the conclusion of the home and away season will play finals.

15 August 2021 | Semi Final 1 – 1st vs 4th | Semi Final 2 – 2nd vs 3rd

22 August 2021 | Grand Final – Winner of Semi Final 1 vs Winner of Semi Final 2

The HFNL acknowledge the importance of participation in junior sport, and as such believes this revised format gives the opportunity for participation in any remaining home and away fixtures (dependent on COVID-19 restrictions), whilst maintaining some reward through finals for teams that have performed well throughout the duration of the interrupted season.

The above scenario planning is dependent and subject to future government announcements and advice/guidelines from AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria. The HFNL would like to thank all member clubs for their collaboration and commitment in working through this process.

Attached to this release are fixtures for the HFNL Saturday and Sunday competitions. No dates have been associated with any home and away fixtures as this is unknown at this point of time.

We hope that all members of the HFNL Community remain safe, and look forward to seeing Football and Netball resume soon when it is safe to do so.

Updated fixtures can be found below.

Message from the HFNL President

Welcome to the second half of the 2021 HFNL season. The first half has been a huge success. On and off the field. Compared to 2020, we have been fortunate to have local football and netball back up and running.

We have run into the dreaded covid pandemic again just to keep us on our toes. Thankfully we only lost one week where no football and netball was played at all. I would like to thank all the clubs for their patience during this time. Thanks to the many participants who made sacrifices in the round with no crowds. Thanks also to the volunteers for their dedication in continuing to support their local football, netball, and junior programs.

It looks like Koroit will be the team to beat again this year. They have only lost one game to second placed North Warrnambool. Third on the ladder is South Warrnambool who have only lost one game as well. The run-up to the finals will be very interesting to watch with these 3 teams fighting out for top spot. Next, we see the surprise packet in Portland. The young tigers have shown some brilliant for on game day. Camperdown are next and have a real spearhead in Sam Gordon up in the goals. He has kicked a couple of bags of 10 so far. Then comes Warrnambool who have been hit hard by injuries. Cobden next started off slow but have shown some good form lately. Watch out for them. Then we have Hamilton, Terang Mortlake and Port Fairy. All these teams can push the higher teams on their day. Good luck to all teams for the rest of the season.

In the open netball, we have Cobden the team to beat. They haven’t lost a game so far. South Warrnambool are 2 games back then North Warrnambool, Warrnambool,  and Koroit. Camperdown next then Hamilton, Portland Port Fairy and Terang Mortlake. Good luck to all the netballers.

Good luck to the junior netball teams competing in Ballarat this weekend who are representing the HFNL at the Association Championships. Thanks to all the coaches, support crew and all the parents.

Thanks must go to my very dedicated and hardworking executive. This year has certainly presented some challenges, and there’s been nothing any one of them wouldn’t take on. We have such a diverse range of knowledge in the team.

Thanks must go to the Ace radio team. Their match of the round broadcast is fantastic. It has a significant following on Saturdays. All over Australia and overseas. I watched a game at home one Saturday on my smart TV. I had a great day sitting in the warmth watching and listening to the team ably led by Matty Stewart and Trent Hill. Add Eyes, Blacky, Possum and Tilt. They do such a fantastic job, and might I add, very funny at times. Their passion for the HFNL and the job of broadcasting comes across very strongly. Well done guys.

We must thank all our sponsors. especially our Major Sponsors including Sungold Milk, Powercor, McDonalds and Lyndoch Living. To all our other sponsors, a huge thank you, we couldn’t do what we do without you.

Once again, all the very best for the second half of the 2021 season, it will be a ripper finish to the season I think.

Kind regards,

Garry Perrett

Injury Assessment   Part Two

STOP

Depending on the situation this may range from actually stopping the game to merely attracting the player’s attention.

ASK?

Where does it hurt? What happen? Was it a direct hit, twist, fall or other? Has this happen before? Have you injured the opposite side? (If appropriate)  Did you hear anything? What type of sensation, sharp pain, dull ache, numb, loose joint, tingling? NOTE: how, when, what and why, as much relevant information as you can get

LOOK

Look at the injured area for swelling, discolouration and deformity. Compare to the other side e.g. injured left knee compare to good right knee. (Just remember if player has had previous injury to that area it may already look different e.g. if they have had surgery)

TOUCH

Gently feel around the injured area starting away from and working closer to the injury. (Consider gloves) Compare to the opposite side and monitor player’s body language.

ACTIVE MOVEMENT

The player moves the joint. E.g. ask the player to firstly move the injury elbow. Note the range of movement

PASSIVE MOVEMENT

Trainer moves the joint. E.g. be advised by the player of their limitations. Don’t go pass the point of pain.

SKILLS

The player should be able to complete all skills perform during the game e.g running, changing direction, jumping, kicking, bump, etc… Depending on the situation these can be observed on the sideline.

Check out our recap of how the Hampden contingent went below:
